Texas Paint Brush ( Castilleja indivisa )

May 9th, 2007

This is my favorite of all the local wildflowers.

Texas Paint Brush can be annual, biannual, or a perennial and is native to Texas.

The flower is actually the yellow part, the orangish part are leaf like bracts. Another odd thing about this plant is that it will let its roots grow till they find roots of other plants and nick a bit of nutrients from those plants.

Sow seed directly onto the ground in the fall. It does not transplant well, use seeds. It prefers full sun and well drained soil.
