Aloe ( disambiguation )

with 7 comments

This is my first attempt at growing aloe outdoors. Someone brought some cuttings off a plant she was trimming to a meeting I was attending the other evening.

Aloes want full sun. They are succulents and store water so they need very little water and will rot if planted in a damp area. Aloes do very well in Houston. I’ve yet to kill one.

Once established and happy they will bloom, flowers come up on tall spikes and are impressive. The aloe sends up new shoots and rapidly forms clusters of plants.

Blooming takes place in winter and it makes a great winter food for hummingbirds and bees.

  1. Actually, down here, Aloe will grow anywhere and everywhere you want to stick a sprig of it. It will even show up in places you didn’t put it.

    Have fun with it!

  3. This plant has been moved to a sunnier location. It has already sent out baby plants. The cold left some brown spots on it but otherwise it hasn’t minded temperatures down into the high 20’s F.

  4. This plant is in a sunny, usually dry, sometimes damp location. The wet and dry spells don’t seem to phase it.

It loves our summers, not so much our winters. It is beginning to spread out sideways now. No flowers yet.

  5. Grows like a weed, flowered from Christmas till now and there are still new stalks getting ready to flower. Great landscape plant for sunny, dry areas.

  6. The aloe is thriving, obviously the drought didn’t bother it.

  7. The frost however did bother it. All the other leaves rotted, inner leaves were protected by outer leaves. It looks like it’ll be ok.
